Was it cast, was it the budget, was it the camera? I thought about it for a while and then came to the conclusion that all of those things were equally important when making not just a short movie but a film of any size. You can’t make a movie without some sort of budget, without some sort of camera, and without some actors. You just can’t do it, impossible, I dare you to try.

I suppose since I look at these things as a given, that I consider them all part of the calculus that must be done in order to pull of any sort of production, that they aren’t hard. That’s not to say that getting an awesome cast for nothing or scoring great gear on loan isn’t hard; it can be really tough. But these things are also essential, there is no movie without them.

For my money, the hardest things about making movies are the details that pop up that most folks don’t even consider or, worse, consider them granted. The best example of this that we’ve run across in making our flicks has been locations. You need a place to shoot, but a lot of budgets I’ve seen either assume that production will find space for cheap if not free OR they omit location expenses all together.

Big mistake when you are trying to shoot anything in a city as film savvy as Los Angeles. Everything we’ve shot with the exception of the Return of Anubis has had significant issues associated with the finding and maintaining of locations. Yes, it is possible to get some kind soul to donate an apartment or a house, or sometimes a bar or restaurant that they might have a hook up with. But in my experience more often you are going to find yourself on the phone talking with managers, homeowners, and shopkeepers. Some will take an nominal fee under the table, others will insist on insurance and security to be present at all times or limit your ability to use the space (such as painting a wall, dusting a library with stage-dust, or covering the place with fake blood). Finding locations can be a pain and dealing with the owners can be a bigger pain. The best advice I can give is get everything down on paper and make sure that everyone – the crew, the owner, the manager, whatever – is aware of what can and can’t be done well in advance. As with all things on a film set, short or otherwise, it might be a royal pain in the ass, but as long as you are aware of it you can manage it and producing (again, this is in my limited experience) is all about managing fires before they burn down the whole production.

Writing...

It's hard people. Written and directed by long time TtW collaborator Adam Mallinger, the story follows bright-eyed Emily during her first day of work as a booth girl at a comics convention. Throughout the day Emily is faced with crazed fans, leering weirdoes, power mad staff, and of course a cast of colorful spokes models all with their own unique take on working the convention floor.

The cast of Booth Girls includes Jen Nikolaisen, Courtnee Draper, Kelsey Crane, Gena Shaw, and Adam Wylie as Comic Con Staffer Wil.

Shot over two days, the production had its fair share of challenges from creating a unique look for each of the booth girls to building and staffing a busy pop culture convention floor. We owe a great deal of gratitude to a cast and crew that brought out their a-game and if the dailies are any indication (and one has to assume they are) we’ve got a great little movie in the making.

Booth Girls is unique in that we have a very specific end goal in mind – to premiere it at the San Diego Comic Con this July – a challenge in that all film submissions must be in by March 1st. The film is currently in the hands of editor Joe Patrow, and a rough cut should be delivered by the end of this week with sound and music to follow soon after.

Thanks to the fantastic cast and crew for making this an amazing experience and as always we invite you to check back often for updates and news about Booth Girls and our other ongoing projects.

Byce, Jon, and Matt

Shout Out...

Friend of TtW and cowriter of The Paranormalists, Scott Barsotti has passed us a link to a very funny web series that he has been staring in. Bryce is at work submitting the finished project to film festivals and we are working out the details for DVD's for friends, family, cast, and crew. Expect more information on the premiere screening early in the New Year.

The Paranormalists is in the capable hands of Mike our sound editor. Brian, master composer for stage and screen, is putting the finishing touches on the score and with any luck sound will be totally finished in January before the whole package gets finalized with our editor Kyle. We've got a great team working on these final beats of the project and as soon as they have finished we will roll out a premiere of the finished picture with Matches in a gala event. Well, maybe gala is a bit grand...I picture big dresses and tuxes when I hear gala. I was thinking more jeans and a beer.

Work will continue on Failing Upwards, which has been getting a great response. We have a third sketch finished and it will be posted to myspace next year. Thank you to everyone who has watched The Assistants and Bathroom Buddies. If you can, give us a hand and spread it around to the friends and family as you head home this holiday season.

Lastly, we have begun work on a new project - a short that caters to the geek-set and will hopefully speak to the folks familiar with Comicon. I don't want to spill to many detail right now beyond that so stay tuned for more updates as we get preproduction under way.

Thanks to everyone for the support throughout the last year; we've accomplished a lot in the past 12 months and as we gear up for the next phase in our scheming it's good to know that we have a solid base of folks keeping tabs and keeping us (mostly) honest. Have a great Holiday, a Happy New Year, and we hope to see you all on the other side.

Bryce, Jon, & Matt

Bathroom Buddies

Add to My Profile More Videos

Addendum

Perhaps I should have been more direct. I'm not going to take all the credit for it though; admit it blogoshere you haven't been all that forthcoming yourself. Just so it's clear it's not all my fault I think we can salvage this relationship.

So we've been busy. The Sketches are done, or I suppose I should say that the first three episodes are done. We've decided to call the whole series FAILING UPWARDS - a call out to our own hopes and dreams here in the biz. Right now it's our hope to post one of them a week for the forseeable future, so please check them out. Our thanks go out to the cast and crew as deliniated below who gave us a weekend or so of their lives in exchange for pizza, cupcakes, and soda.

To take care of a bit of housekeeping, I wanted to post the behind the scenes video that was put together for the Matches DVD. Bryce's movie is done, done, done, and while we are still working out some final distribution issues it's totally rad to have the picture locked down. To celebrate you should take a look at Matches: Behind the Genius in order to get a taste of things to come.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v12.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3De6dad3392410107e%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329933764%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D4C4C257E966AA793141ECC4E20FA8EA98A965208.10E4E34B296EBDB1C3D336175607F23E96E927E2%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3De6dad3392410107e%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DaQzFbQnEIg67XmTqGNOa3tRiofI&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Forthcoming

Hello, Ciao, Hola, and γειάσου

We’ve been busy lately and that’s why we haven’t been so good about the updates. So get off my back mom, alright?

With Matches so close to done it hurts, we decided we needed a new project. Since the Lord of the Rings was already produced and it’s a little to soon to start talking about remaking it we had to come up with some of our own ideas. So we did that. This weekend we took those ideas and committed them to tape with the help of some close associates of TTW. After an extended labor the professionals welcomed the new arrival into the world with all the pomp and circumstance expected the harbringer of the apocalypse. At a petite 12 minutes, the proud parent decided to name the little guy Matches. We hope to have a little something to celebrate this joyus occation soon.

Congrats to Bryce; great job to the post production team!

For the Good and True

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v11.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D74b616690fddcef7%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329933764%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D3DEF4F1CC79EFF91760C0A08553FA8A80AD8585E.5E13DE7F26E531D7C8D987F2E4CD3CA96C410005%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D74b616690fddcef7%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D9chgIYncfBD6gq3ukmDIVRJRhKI&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Celebrate, oh wanting masses. For those of you not savey with the interweb, let me break it down for you. Myspace is this new service that allows people who weren't hugged enough as kids, chosen last to play on the kick ball team, or have mommy and daddy issues to act out in a totally anonymus way. No longer do you have ACTUALLY become a cutter to get your parent's attention; now you can just play one on the internet. Since we also have our own problems with attention (or lack there of) it seemed like this myspace thing was made for us.

So there you have it. Big news, yes?

Oh, yeah Matches is nearing completition and The Paranormalists is still working out some bugs on sound.

UPDATE

It's been a while, so it's time for everyone's favorite game - Update Our Mom's! All you need in order to play is a website that only your mom reads. Who's ready?

The picture has locked on The Paranormalists. Right now we are searching for a sound editor to create some magic with our haunted house. We are out to several accoplished friends and friends of friends, and it's our hope to have the picture wrapped by the end of October. I hope I didn't just jinx it. I asked Bryce if he had anything he'd like to share about Matches, but all I got was a finger.

I'll let you decide which one.

The Brain Trust here is hard at work on a few promising short projects, some of which might go into production within the next month. It is our hope that these flicks will be shorter then Matches and The Paranormalists and primarily live online, either here or on our myspace page. I'll be sure to update you on the status of these guys as soon as we get something committed to tape.

Lastly, but not leastly...leastly is that a...never mind...I am happy to report that we have been mentioned on a website that we didn't write. Yes that's right folks, if you follow this link, you will find yourself at the web home of friends of the family Chad, Matt, and Rob. Here, Byrce and I (and Jon if he ever gets around to directing anything) will present a frank and open discussion of topics relevant to the small budget short film producer/maker. To kick things off we will be talking about developing an idea.

Matt:

Ideas are what this business is all about, but where do they come from? This is a question I've asked myself time and time again. Well, pull up a chair mon frere it's time for me to drop some learning on you; ideas are everywhere. That's right, there is no magic about it at all as some (read:writers) would have you believe. Walking in to work today I was hit with a hundred ideas for short films. A real director is a person who can take this banal life experiences and add what I like to call The Pazzazz in order to punch things up. Picture this: a guy get's up, goes to work, and when he get's there he has to use a shakey old elevator. Pretty standard, right? What if when the elevator doors open he's not at work at all, but in the seventh circle of hell!? He obviously got off on the wrong floor, right? Well he's going to have to fight his way out, maybe save some one…oh his mom…make it his mom, for dramas sake, you know. Suddenly that really basic idea is looking like a run away internet sensation. So now that you have your idea you are going to need someone to get it all on paper, a secretary, or note taker that can take this awesome idea and flush it out, anyone will do because if the idea is good enough an ape could write the dialoge. If you look at your idea and that isn't true, well then it looks like you still have some work to do.

Bryce:

Oh Matthew, Matthew, Matthew. Pazzazz is crap and you know it. If you have an idea you need to develop it from the ground up like a house, because as we all know a house without a good, sound structure and foundation will crumble in a heap and pretty soon you realize you left your wife and kids inside and you're screwed. Which could be good or bad depending on how you're feeling at the time. But in the world of movies it's a sure fire recipe for disastrous crap. If you don't spend time developing or even collaborating on interesting characters, conflict, dialogue, no matter how much you dress it up with "Pazzazz" you'll have a horrible movie. I will allow that people sometimes like big pieces of shit on screen to sit and stuff food in their faces, I.E. Transformers, Spiderman 3, basically the whole summer 07 season, but most everyone will tell you the story sucked. They may even go so far as to say who cares about the story. Well I do Sancho, I do! If you have an idea, you should write it, nurture it, develop it, make it your own. Only then after the grueling process that is writing and developing can you truly start to feel you possibly have a great film on your hands. By the way, apes have no business writing dialogue, unless of course they're writing for the CW. Well then it all makes sense.

A Shout Out

These days anyone with a camera and an internet connection can create short (or long as the case may be) content. If you didn’t hear about it until just now don’t take offense; we are highly selective of the sort of people we call our friends. Anyhow, it came to our attention that a general update of the state of several of our ongoing projects may be in order.

Matches is nearing completion. Bryce has received locked picture as well as the score and both are now in the capable hands of his sound editor Mike Ciacco. Delivery of the film with sound is forthcoming in the next week.

The Paranormalists is presently undergoing picture edit and we hope to lock very soon. Music is being composed for the short (as noted below) and we are awaiting delivery on the “Making Of Featurette.”

It is our hope to roll out both films at a gala event (you know, chips, soda, the works) date to be determined.

Paranormalists - Key Art

I hope to be able to post some artwork put together for the short by friend/artist Liz Martinez-Nelson. Liz was good enough to apply her great talents to creating a really cool painting for us featuring our two favorite ghost hunters. We are lucky to have her helping us out with this project. In addition to Liz's one sheet, there is a distinct possibility that we'll have another pair of options for posters...a true embarrassment of riches...hopefully that's it on the embarrassment front for now. As soon as the art is done, we'll throw it up. Right now, we are waiting for a new cut of the picture from editor Kyle Stewart. Despite being a superstitious guy in the best of circumstances, I have a very good feeling that we are nearing the end of the picture edit process. Kyle has done some amazing things so far and I can't wait to see the next assemblage.

Brian Giovanni, composer extraordinary, recently delivered the score for Matches and tells me that he is hard at work on the music for the Paranormalists. So far I've heard a "main theme" and the first draft of a theme for Chance and Ben and I've been impressed. Beyond music, my thoughts have been drifting to the sound effects we're going to need. Watching the footage time after time has only pounded home the importance of solid sound work to achieving the overall feeling we want for the finished film. I suppose that goes without saying, but it's very hard not to take for granted how important sound is to the tone and tenor of a film. In our case, the sound will hopefully make the house come to life, it will create an entity for the other actors to react to, to be afraid of, to curse and to...well you get the idea.

I understand that my revelations about sound and sound design are anything but; But as I sit here writing the post I'm taken with the sheer amount of space we have to fill and thought what better way to fill it then to harp about things that we all should know? More updates from my end as soon as they come in...

Matt

A Home Away From Home

In an effort to avoid a lapse in our posting while we try to make magic over at tommorrowtheworld.net we've set up this blogger page.
